MYOB makes the whole world more peaceful

A few months ago I was reading a news article about churches creating a political movement to ban the selling of alcohol on Sundays.  My first thought was “Who said these churches have to sell alcohol on Sunday?”  Of course, that’s too simple.  It’s really about wanting to control an entire state.  A spokesperson in the article even said it’s a moral issue rather than a political issue, as though that’s a legitimate reason to legislate.

Truth is, my life has been negatively affected by alcoholism for years.  It would be so easy for me to blame booze for the negative things in my life.  But I don’t.  Alcoholism is a disease.  It prevents the sick person from making good choices.  It clouds their judgment and blinds them to how they are hurting themselves and those around them.  Drinking is an option.  For an untreated alcoholic it does not feel like an option but for the rest of us we may or may not drink on occasion and no law will change these choices.

As a society we should already be aware that banning alcohol does little to curb consumption or alcoholism.  If you don’t believe me, look up “Prohibition”.  It doesn’t work.  Alternatively, for a more modern example, check out “war on drugs”.  How’s that working for you?  Has drug use gone down?  How about murder rates?  And how is recidivism looking?

The new big debate is about contraception.  Certain religious groups disapprove of contraception and are pushing to get insurance companies to drop coverage and for states to ban certain forms.  Seriously, bad move!  We already face overcrowding, diminishing natural resources, a broken public school system, too few jobs for too many people… reward people who use proper contraception and disease prevention!  Don’t take it away!

And don’t get me started on “gay marriage”!  What’s so gay about it!?!  Two people who are legally able to enter into a legal contract and both of them want to do it should be allowed to and gender ought to be irrelevant.  If you don’t think people should marry someone of their same gender, then don’t marry someone your same gender.  If you think marriage is strictly about procreation, then there’s a whole lot of childless marriages out there that need to be annulled!

I guess what I’m saying is I think the world would be a more peaceful place if more people would just mind their own freaking business!
